| The
Area
Villasimius is a unique place in the Mediterranean: sun, sea,
vigorous vegetation and brilliant white sand, have created a pure
and untamed paradise.
The village is situated 40 kilometres away from the port of Cagliari
and around 50 kilometres from Elmas airport. The new A125 through
road, which will link Cagliari to Arbatax, is currently under
construction, and will significantly reduce distances and journey
times. The Sarrabus regional airport, soon to be built in Castiadas,
around 10 kilometres from Villasimius, will allow tourists to
reach their destination in no time at all.
The road which links Cagliari and Villasimius at present is heavily
trafficked, but extremely panoramic.
Having left the island capital, one passes through a stretch of
flat land belonging to Quartu Sant' Elena, the third most populous
town in Sardinia, after which a breathtaking serpentine mountain
road begins. Before reaching Villasimius, one must first go through
the sea resorts of Cala Regina, Geremeas, Torre delle Stelle and
Solanas, spread out over headlands rich in typical Mediterranean
plant-life and framed by a magnificent emerald-green and turquoise
sea.
Finally, having negotiated several rather challenging bends, one
arrives in Villasimius. Suddenly, the colours become bright, the
air is scented with myrtle, lentiscus, juniper and broom. The
village welcomes visitors with simple, wholehearted kindness,
often arousing in them an intense desire to return.
The borough of Villasimius is spread over an area of 56 square
kilometres, from Mount Minni Minni (725 m above sea level) to
the north and the Cavoli Island (Cabbage Island) to the South.
The eastern frontier is the island of Serpentara, the western,
the Cape Boi promontory.
From the highest point of Minni Minni, reached on guided tours,
mountain bike and on foot, it is possible to see the entire territory.
Villasimius lies in the vast Simius plain at the foot of Bruncu
Tiriarxius and Bruncu Campolongu. Beyond these, Cape Carbonara,
the extreme south-east point of Sardinia, extends out to Cavoli
Island.
On the Seven Brothers massif and in the ancient forests of Villasimius,
which it seeks to safeguard and preserve with the setting up of
mountain and marine parks, a variety of protected species, some
of them threatened with extinction, have found their ideal habitat.
For example, increasingly numerous colonies of deer, wild boar,
golden eagles, buzzards, ravens, non-domestic cats, martens, foxes,
wood pigeons, woodpeckers, pink flamingos, as well as other beautiful
animals, can be encountered along the area’s country paths
and dirt tracks.
Blending well with the surrounding countryside, the various accommodation
possibilities allow any kind of request to be fulfilled, even
from the most demanding tourist, with high-class hotels, campsites,
farmstays and holiday homes.
Moreover, local products and traditional Sardinian cooking can
be tasted, with roast suckling pig, kid, lamb or grilled fish,
and side-dishes of ham, salami, olives and different types of
cheeses.
Various types of sweets and cakes are produced, such as amaretti,
“formagelle” (sweet cheese tarts), “Sebadas”
(sweet cheese fritters), several types of honey and excellent
local wines.
From June to September, it is possible to watch or take part in
folk entertainment, musicals, (food) festivals and popular traditions.
The season begins with the religious feasts of St Raphael and
Our Lady of the Shipwrecked, with an evocative procession of the
faithful to the sea, where a statue of the Virgin Mary is lowered
under water.
