MENHIRS
These are
great megalithic complexes, situated on flat land  near
prehistoric, pre-nuragic villages and go back to the 3rd millenium
BC.
These complexes, denominated menhirs, had the function of being
a stone “list” for public use, able to determine the
cycles of the seasons. However, a cultural use is also possible,
as happens even now with certain, primitive tribes in the world
today.
The menhirs are granite slabs in triangular or quadrangular form,
positioned orthostatically with 1m deep foundations under the ground
and 1.00-1.80 above it.
The aggregations of menhirs, in groups of 30 or 40, used always
to be linked with the existing archaeological structures, nuraghi,
tombs of the giants and domus de janas, positioned between them
by means of constant angular distances and modular metrics..
According to studies carried out in the area, it is clear that they
were used as astronomic rules and solar calendars, similar to the
great religious-astronomic complex of “Stonehenge” in
Great Britain.
Given the substantial structural analogies between the Sardinian
and British menhirs, it is feasible to suggest that the megalithic
complexes called “Cuili and Piras”, made up of 53 well
alligned examples, were put in place by fringe group of sun-worshippers
and, therefore, coming from far-off Britain.
In the territory of Castiadas it is possible to visit these megalithic
complexes. The number varies according to the nuragic complex from
2 to 53 menhirs.
