| Tour of
the Villasimius-Castiadas coast
The short trip is made enjoyable by the surrounding countryside,
which is of substantial naturalistic importance both for the gentle
climbs of the
“Minni Minni”, “S’Acqua Callenti”
and “Buddui” forests and for the long, white sandy
beaches. We reach Castiadas, site of a penal colony from 1875
to 1956, where the prisoners were used to reclaim the land. The
jail at Castiadas has left a valuable urbanistic system and through
the generosity
of the cooperative which maintains it, it is still possible to
relive feelings and moments from that time.
The way back offers a splendid panorama of the new geo-marine
park which extends from Capo Carbonara to Punta Molentis in a
succession of headlands, inlets and bays, alternating between
the dark blue of deeper waters to the emerald green of shallower
seas, with a view over the uninhabited islands of Serpentara and
Cavoli. Here, the vigorous vegetation and rich sea-life are the
focus of study by the Science and Botany Faculty at the University
of Cagliari.
