| The Protected
Marine Area of Cape Carbonara.
The Protected Marine Area of Cape Carbonara, given official approbation
on the 15th of September 1998, forms a triangle around the extreme
tip of South East Sardinia, in the borough of Villasimius, and
has several fundamental objectives:
- To protect, preserve and make the most of the natural resources
in the sea and along the coast around Villasimius.
- To promote sustainable, socio-economic development, in harmony
with the environment.
- To create environmental awareness among local inhabitants and
tourists.
Conservation is to be achieved through the banning of all the
activities which could damage or endanger animal and plant species
in the area.
n the Protected Marine Area, three smaller domains are present
with different levels of conservation:
ZONE A complete preservation (western area of Serpentara
Island),
ZONE B general preservation (eastern area of Serpentara
Island, Shallows of Berni, Cavoli Island - Cape Carbonara, southern
zone of Cavoli Island).
ZONE C partial preservation (the remaining stretch of
sea in the Protected Marine Area).
The
promotion and economic development of the region must be consistent
with the PMA conservation project. To guarantee this, therefore,
the following items and activities are prohibited:
a) the hunting, capture, collection and damaging
of the animal and plant species present, as well as the introduction
of extraneous species;
b) the dumping of any type of rubbish, the introduction
of any substance which might alter the sea environment and the
alteration by any means of the geophysical and biochemical state
of the water.
c) the introduction of weapons, explosives and
any means of destruction and hunting, as well as toxic substances
and pollutants;
d) activities which cause damage, hindrance or
disturbance to the study and research programmes to be carried
out in the area.
